Why Organisation Isn’t About Tidiness And What It’s Really Costing You
There’s a tendency to think about organisation as something surface level.
A tidy desk. A clear inbox. A well-structured calendar.
But what became clear in my recent conversation with organisational expert Tracy Hoth is that organisation runs much deeper than that. It’s about removing friction.
Friction in your day is often subtle. It looks like searching for things you know you have. It shows up in delayed responses, missed opportunities, or conversations that feel more strained than they need to be. Over time, that friction compounds.
It begins to affect how you feel in yourself.
Your confidence starts to dip when things feel out of control. Your energy becomes scattered. Your focus becomes fragmented. And eventually, it can start to feel like you’re working much harder than you should be for the results you’re creating.
What I found particularly insightful is the distinction between a skill gap and a mindset gap.
For some, the challenge is practical. They’ve never been shown a simple way to organise their time, their files, or their processes. Without that skill, frustration builds quickly.
For others, the barrier sits at a deeper level. It’s the belief that they are disorganised. That this is just who they are. And when that identity is in place, it becomes a ceiling. Because you will always operate in alignment with what you believe to be true about yourself.
There’s also the role of overwhelm.
When everything feels like too much, the natural response is to freeze. Not because you’re incapable, but because there’s no clear starting point. And without a plan, even the smallest step can feel disproportionate.
What becomes powerful is shifting from that state into clarity, one small step at a time by creating a simple structure. A place for things to live. A process to follow. A decision made, rather than delayed.
Organisation then becomes less about control and more about creating space.
Space to think. Space to focus. Space to actually experience the life and business you’re building, rather than constantly trying to keep up with it.
This is where growth becomes sustainable.
Because when your environment, your systems, and your internal state are aligned, you’re no longer fighting against friction. You’re moving with clarity and intention.
