The Five Cogs of a Marketing Machine That Runs Without You
How to break the cycle of marketing, working, then scrambling for clients all over again
Most people start a business because they're brilliant at something, and marketing is the job that arrives with it. As I said on the podcast this week, "If you were that marketing savvy, you'd have a marketing business, right?"
While you're busy doing the work you're paid for, someone still needs to be marketing you. That thought landed while I was watching a cleaner arrive at a job. She was clearly good at what she does. Maybe she had a poster up somewhere or a Facebook page, set up once and left to do its own thing. Nobody was cranking that lever.
It's the cycle so many solo business owners, coaches and consultants know well. You do a burst of marketing, clients come in, you focus on serving them, the marketing stops, and a dry spell follows. If your business stops bringing in new potential customers the moment you stop pushing, the machine hasn't been built yet and you're still pulling the lever by hand.
A marketing machine has five cogs, and each one can be built to keep turning without you.
Get Seen
Attention is your lifeblood in business today. Access to visibility has never been easier, since you no longer need the budget for a billboard or a radio advert, and cutting through the noise has never been harder. Show up where your people actually spend their time, speak the language they use at the stage they're at, and do it consistently instead of only when inspiration strikes. My best ideas tend to land in the shower or while I'm driving, which is why the system matters. It turns those authentic moments into something that reliably goes out.
Being seen also includes other people's platforms, publications, podcasts and stages. Start with where you're already strong. A great writer will get further publishing articles than they will on a stage they haven't learned to command yet.
Build Trust
Trust comes when you mean what you say. I learned that teaching parents, and it applies to business too. Showing up consistently builds it, being human builds it, and being of value builds it.
The human part carries more weight now than ever, because so much can be generated and polished in minutes. Most of us now hesitate when an unknown number calls, because we can't be sure there's a person on the other end. Look for the things that can't be faked. Going live can't be faked, and neither can turning up in person, whether that's on a stage or as a delegate at an event having a real conversation.
Lead Generation
A lead is someone who has put their hand up and said they're interested. They might have been watching you from the background for years. Lead generation is the moment they step forward, like walking into a shop, looking around and deciding to speak to someone. They can only do that if you give them a way, whether that's a freebie, a list, a group or a conversation.
Nurture
This is the cog most often missed, because people go straight from lead to sales pitch. Nurture moves someone from interested to ready, and how long it takes depends on what you sell. Someone buying a notebook needs to like the notebook. Someone hiring a coach for something personal needs to feel safe with you first. Relationship, results and reviews all deepen the trust you've already started building.
Conversion
This is your point of sale. For some businesses it's a link and a checkout. For others it's a conversation, an application or a qualifying step. Either way, you need to know what yours is.
Once you can see all five cogs, look at which ones only turn when you're there to turn them. Those are your bottlenecks. Break them into smaller pieces and find what can be automated or systemised. Like any engine, the machine still needs oiling, tuning and adjusting as markets change, and it's far easier to delegate parts of it later, to a person or to AI, once you understand exactly what you're asking for. I've tried handing things off before I knew what I wanted, and what came back was never what I needed.
