Why Smart Entrepreneurs Make Bad Decisions When They're Overwhelmed

July 21, 20263 min read

There's a moment Melissa Lewis described to me that I have been deeply thinking about. A day, early on in her property business, where she couldn't get out of bed.

She'd built her business by saying yes to almost anything. Viewings, inventories, inspections, whatever a landlord needed. Each booking on its own felt small. Twenty pounds for a viewing. A hundred for an inventory, depending on the size of the property. But the maths shifted from ‘I could make a certain amount selling properties’ to ‘I need to book this many appointments just to cover the bills’, and somewhere in that shift, burnout arrived without an invitation.

“I had no idea what burnout was until I got there”, Melissa told me. “And there was like a day where I just couldn't get out of bed”.

What struck me most wasn't the burnout itself. It was what she said next, about the state she was operating from in the months leading up to it.

Hope Is Not a Strategy

“So I was in a state of hope”, Melissa explained. “I know I need to make this amount of appointments or whatever it is per month. This is the minimum. If I don't hit it, danger. If I hit it, great”.

That's not a business strategy. That's survival mode dressed up as ambition. And it's a pattern I see constantly in the entrepreneurs I work with, this idea that if you just push a little harder, hold on a little longer, the breakthrough is one more appointment away.

It rarely is. What actually changed things for Melissa wasn't pushing harder. It was looking honestly at what she was offering and realising that everything she did required her physically in the room. The viewings needed her there. The investor meetings needed her there. There was no version of the business that could run without her standing in it.

The turning point, when it finally came, was building something that generated income without relying on her legs and her car being in a specific place at a specific time. A small portfolio of HMOs gave her the breathing space that hustling harder never could.

The Cost of Deciding From the Wrong Place

This is the part of the conversation that I think matters most for anyone building something on their own. Melissa now actively schedules around her own energy. She knows she's sharper for certain decisions earlier in the day. She blocks time according to what kind of thinking a task actually needs, rather than throwing everything into one undifferentiated pile and feeling crushed by the size of it.

It also shows how much work you've done on your mindset, Melissa said, because it takes a while to even get to a point where you stop beating yourself up for not getting everything done in a day.

That's the part that doesn't get talked about enough. We talk about strategy, about systems, about the next tactic. We don't talk enough about the fact that decision quality is downstream of nervous system state. You can have the right plan and still make the wrong call if you're making it from a place of depletion.

What Due Diligence on Yourself Actually Looks Like

Melissa's work now is helping people work out whether a property is genuinely profitable before they buy it. But the conversation we had was really about a different kind of due diligence, the kind you do on your own capacity before you commit to anything else.

It's not about working less. It's about knowing when you're operating from calm, open awareness versus tight, constricted survival energy, because the decisions you make from each place are not the same decisions.

If you're recognising any of this in yourself right now, eSCHOOL is built for exactly this kind of work, the mindset and the practical systems together, integrated and implemented, not just taught. Take a look here: https://www.lucyshrimpton.com/membership
